media, as 28 women move forward with the first Olaplex hair lawsuit for hair
loss.
The Olaplex lawsuit
asserted that the company's products caused hair loss, bald spots, scalp
rashes, brittle hair, and hair breakage. It was filed on February 9, 2023 in the
U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. It demanded to
discontinue fraudulent advertising and more than $75,000 in damages for
everyone.
Dean and Darcy Christal created the
California-based Olaplex Holdings, INC. They began with the key formulation
created in 2014 by eminent scientists Dr. Craig Hawker and Dr. Eric Pressly.
Olaplex asserts that its main ingredient, Bis-Aminopropyl Digylcol Dimaleate,
"changed haircare forever" and is "patent-protected active
ingredient."
In the initial Olaplex case, it was claimed
that Olaplex's No. 0 through No. 9 products were dangerous and allergic
responses were caused by them. The 28 plaintiffs are being defended by
attorneys Amy E. Davis, Steve Calamusa, and David E. Rosen in their lawsuit against
the well-known cosmetics behemoth.
The hair of one of the claimants, who had
previously had curly and wavy hair, was now frizzy and straight, she claimed.
Some plaintiffs alleged that using Olaplex products damaged their hair and gave
it an untidy, weedwhacker-like appearance.
Additionally, the lawsuit claimed that Olaplex
included the dangerous scent ingredient lial (also known as butylphenyl
methylpropional). The official classification of this fragrance component as
"reprotoxic," which is detrimental to reproduction and capable of
causing non-heritable problems.
According to the lawsuit, the Olaplex products
contain the chemicals sodium benzoate and ascorbic acid, which when combined
produce the carcinogen benzene.
Olaplex continues to utilise benzene-containing hair care products even though
many makers of cosmetics have taken them off the market.
Following the filing of the case, JuE Wong,
the CEO of Olaplex, spoke with the media. She said that Olaplex products are
"safe and effective" and "do not cause hair loss or
breakage." She continued by saying that they are ready to vehemently
defend their business, brand, and products from the unfounded claims.
After the Olaplex case
was filed, acrimonious debates erupted online and quickly spread like wildfire.
12,000 comments on the Olaplex products were made, both in favor of and against
the items' efficacy and safety.
